Providing care for a family member or friend with Alzheimer's can be a difficult act of love that many of us are currently or one day in the future will be faced with. The good news is that we don't have to face it alone.
For those in Western Oklahoma, there is currently an Alzheimer's support group in Elk City, OK, and it is sponsored by the Alzheimer's Association.
The support group takes places every third Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. at Baptist Village (1500 W. Country Club, Elk City, OK 73644). More information can be obtained by contacting Kristi Akins at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The Alzheimer's support group in Elk City is conducted by a trained facilitator and is a safe place for caregivers, family and friends of persons with dementia to:
Exchange practical information on care giving challenges and possible solutions
Talk through issues and ways of coping
Share feelings, needs and concerns
Learn about community resources
At Sunshine Home Care, our disease management team has extensive experience with Alzheimer's and dementia, and we know the challenges that care givers can face. Support groups are one of the great ways to get through the challenging times. This article on finding support for Alzheimer's caregivers might also provide you with some additional information on how to find the support you need.
There are also times when we aren't sure if someone we love is in the beginning stages of dementia or not. This article can offer guidance on deciding if someone outside of your home needs help, and this article can help you identify if your loved one is facing Alzheimer's or normal mental aging.
