Fit and Fun: New Year's Resolutions for Aging Friends and Relatives

December 31, 2017

Some of the biggest New Year's Resolutions is to become more active, get in shape, or lose weight. Usually, these goals become more difficult as we age.

Below are some goals for 2018 that you may be able to suggest (or do with) an aging relative or friend:

  • Join a fitness center! Many times these center's offer classes such as water aerobics or yoga specifically designed for seniors.

  • Learn to dance! Many cities and towns have specific senior dance clubs to join.

  • Enjoy a little spring cleaning! Play some upbeat music to make things fun while you go!

  • Take a hike! No need to find steep trails for this one. Many times, you can find flat trails that provide beautiful scenery. Fresh air and sunshine can work wonders for those that don't often have the opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors.

  • Start a garden! Gardening can be a relaxing way to get out doors and increase flexibility by bending, stretching, and lifting.

  • Go shopping! Or just enjoy the malls and stores. Getting out to do some extended walking never hurts and brightens the spirit.

As always, your friend or relative should consult their physician before undertaking any serious exercise regimen.

While these are some great ideas to get started, take the time to assess your aging relative. If you notice them having trouble with depression or activities of daily living, they may need more help. If you you feel this might be the case, Sunshine Home Care may be able to help. Contact us or call us today at 1-877-477-2014 with any questions you may have.
